OAS Peer Coach

The Office of Academic Support offers academic and personal enrichment services to UF students. We strive to equip a diverse undergraduate population with the knowledge, skills, and resources to successfully navigate their collegiate experiences. Peer coaches play a key role in our goal to provide an encouraging and welcoming environment for incoming students. Your role will be to help incoming students transition from high school to college, including PROMISE students and students part of the UF Student Support Services (SSS) Trio Program.

Responsibilities and Duties:

  • Assist students and families with their transition to UF
  • Keep mentees well informed with regard to OAS programs and services and promote such activities
  • Provide encouragement and advice to mentees
  • Commit five (5) hours a week for office hours
  • Provide and maintain communication logs with all mentees
  • Participate in OAS Workshops and Events
  • Communicate with OAS Undergraduate Peer Coordinators to ensure that mentees are successfully adapting to the collegiate environment
  • Serve as a liaison to OAS faculty and staff and help students with academic and personal development adjustments, resolving conflicts and problem-solving, as needed
  • Serve as a representative for the Office of Academic Support in the UF and Gainesville community
  • Make appropriate referrals to other UF departments and resources

Qualifications:

  • PCs should be: mature, reliable, have a positive attitude, self-awareness and flexibility
  • Strong sense of commitment to helping incoming first-generation or diverse students and their families during the student’s transition to UF
  • Be professional and possess ethical standards
  • Must attend the mandatory Spring semester training sessions tentative for March-April
  • Must participate in mandatory In-Service Training scheduled for April-May
  • Be able to commit a maximum of 4 office hours per week to coach students.
  • Be able to commit a maximum of two hours per month outside of the office for social hours.
  • Be flexible to commit additional hours assisting with workshops, activities and OAS-related events.
  • Must be in good academic standing with a GPA 2.80 or above
  • Strongly encouraged to participate in Summer CONNECT typically in late June. (Exceptions will be considered by case. Please communicate any concerns with attendance ASAP.)

Submission Guidelines

Please note that you must share the recommender form link with the appropriate recommender. Your application will be considered incomplete until the recommender has submitted their recommendation on your behalf.

Your application packet should include:

  •  A current resume (1 page). This should be accurate and up-to-date with job history, student organizations, and other leadership opportunities
  • A current headshot
  • Most recent Unofficial UF Transcript from Student Self Service (edits are unacceptable)
  • Ensure recommenders submit the recommendation form to OAS staff by the deadline specified in the application.
